Be Prepared For Hurricane Season

prepare_checklistIt’s hard to imagine that it’s already summertime which means the start of Hurricane Season. The 2014 Atlantic Hurricane season officially began on Sunday, June 1 and spans all of summer and most of fall, ending November 30th. The National Hurricane Center stresses the importance of early preparation for the months preceding June – November. Throughout the summer Florida experiences more prevalent activity for tropical storms and hurricanes. My Neighborhood Storage Center encourages everyone to take the necessary precaution to ensure that you and your family and belongings remain safe in the event of a natural disaster.

Outlined below are some basic hurricane safety actions from The National Hurricane Center:
• Know if you live in an evacuation area. Know your home’s vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind. Have a written plan based on this knowledge.
• At the beginning of hurricane season, check the supplies for your disaster supply kit, replace batteries and use food stocks on a rotating basis.
• During hurricane season, monitor the tropics.
• Monitor NOAA Weather Radio. It is an excellent / official source for real-time weather information and warnings.
• If a storm threatens, heed the advice from local authorities. Evacuate if ordered.
• Execute your family plan

For those of you with storage units, we encourage you to contact the office manager to ensure that your items are properly insured for natural disasters. They will provide you with more information about coverage options. Remember, start planning early and please feel free to call us at anytime should you have questions on how My Neighborhood Storage Center might be able to assist you throughout the hurricane season.

A big thanks to those who came out and supported My Neighborhood Storage Center at the SPCA of Central Florida’s 20th Anniversary Paws in the Park event on Saturday, February 8th at Lake Eola in Downtown Orlando. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals hosts this annual fundraiser which raises money to find permanent homes for thousands of homeless animals. This year’s event was a huge success thanks to crowd pleaser Victoria Stilwell, star of Animal Planet’s hit TV series, “It’s Me or the Dog”. There was something for everyone, including a Disney Kids and Family Zone. My Neighborhood Storage Center was proud to be a part of such a wonderful event. Our doggie treats and Frisbee giveaways were a hit and we appreciate those who stopped by to show their support.
